Why such widespread dislike and distrust of the Scottish Fishermens Federation….

TO ANSWER SFF SUPPORTERS CONTINUAL QUESTION;

Why such widespread  dislike and distrust of the Scottish Fishermens Federation ……

Because it is corrupt to the core and like Mrs May says one thing and does another for selected interests. Its the deceit and lies that are most infuriating.

If there was honesty to admit it has become a corporate clique (with some pro-EU leanings), who don’t want change and are happy to stitch it up for a few it would be honest.

Not to been seen to say one thing and do another the opposite that will see many of its trusting members hung out to dry as the industry is led on down the road if continual consolidation policies.

The clique which for years did everything to not back UK withdrawal through the 1990s and aligned with the state to pillor anyone for campaigning to get out the CFP which most fishermen wanted – they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then.

Rather than try to get out or beat the system they bent the knee and pursued working within to control managed decline. If the whole industry had come behind withdrawal then, when legally the CFP had no legal basis, we could have saved alot more of the fleet from savage scrapping schemes in the 2000s  – they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then.

When the chance of Brexit came, and 92% of the industry wanted out, Big quota interests and flagships exercised infulence for the status quo and they wouldn’t back Brexit and hid behind the guise of ‘neutrality’.

It was left to Fishing For Leave alone to put the industry back on the map as an acid test of Brexit – they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then.

When we got Brexit they and their proxies in the SFF (FFL won’t publish emails and tapes yet), decided to try to knife FFL that had become a recognized name to see Brexit through (despite the offer by FFL at meetings to put the past behind).

Why? because the SFF wanted to control any Brexit dividend and didn’t want people like those in FFL around to upset the apple cart by calling for fair shares. Some attempted to knife FFL in the back for daring to call for fair shares and a move to better systems through pilots. – they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then.

We get to London and lobbying for future policy and we have Bertie Armstrong on behalf of the SFF resolutely seeking assurance that all repatriated resources will go through FQAs benefiting the biggest rather than have equal shares of a national resource allocated through a national community pool so those struggling most get a chance.

The SFF will not back what FFL are saying that all repatriated resources get divided out to all fishermen and communities- they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then.

They won’t condemn flagships and won’t lobby for curtailing big EU companies from squeezing out family fishing – they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then. .

They won’t even admit let alone discuss the massive problem of uncontrolled quota rent and slipper skippers pushing the price of leasing the right to go to sea to astronomical levels and in doing so bleeding half the profit out the industry,

Stifling reinvestment, barring new entrants and driving families out. Defra hadn’t a clue about quota rent till FFL explained it – they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent then.

When everyone finally grasped in March what FFL said in October – that the transition meant re-obeying all EU law. That this was an existential threat as the EU can enforce the discard ban, bankrupt our fleet and they use UNCLOS 62.2 to claim what we don’t have a fleet to catch – was there a peep of protest from the SFF…?

No – they had a meeting in Downing Street just before with May and Robbins and when the transition was formalised shrugged their shoulders and said focus on the long term prize – no one bar a few will be left to claim it.

Would they fight with FFL to protest it….? No, prominent members rang round to dissuade anyone from doing anything in the NE of Scotland.- they let down the average fishermen they are meant and purport to represent.

What emerges is a pattern of working with government to not let the industry really fight for getting out the EU and changing from systems that have been monopolised by a few whilst running along with managed decline to last man standing.

So to those sycophants defending the SFF…. tell FFL and many others. After all that should we all be happy and not pissed off?

Should FFL and others who are unhappy with the situation just shut up and let what’s blatantly wrong go past and see family fishermen like  shafted out till we have a fleet owned by a few big companies like Iceland…?

If those supporting the SFF want to practice sycophantracy for whatever reasons fine. Whether its having to rent entitlement to fish, necessity of guard work, liking the brand, family ties whatever.

But please don’t insult the intelligence of many others by saying when we’re being pissed on that it’s raining and we should be grateful for it.

What Bertie Armstrong, Ian Gatt and Mike Park (following on from John Goodlad and George Alexander) have made the SFF stand for and what they’ve done is shameful for the fishermen they are trusted to represent.

If they had any shame they’d resign before they dig any deeper with a hole of Catch Quotas and CCTV that they opened up trying to find a way to preserve the quota system to protect investment in it.

FFL have developed a  discard free, more sustainable quota/effort hybrid to get away from discards, inaccurate science and the unsustainability of this.

All whilst preserving current FQAs and investments. This is to try to save the industry from choke species where vessels have to tie up on exhausting their lowest quota and will resultantly go bust.

Will the SFF work with us to explore this option, No. They’re welded to maintaining the status quo regardless of the result for most fishermen, communities and the environment.

That is why so many, despite trying to engage and reason have had enough and FFL is one of them.
