FISHING FOR LEAVE AND LEAVE MEANS LEAVE HIGHLIGHT THE CFP IN TORQUAY
On Saturday 13th Skippers from Fishing for Leave attended the Leave Means Leave ‘Stop a Brexit Betrayal Rally” in Torquay.
Fishing for Leave and Leave Means Leave had organised for vessels to berth in Torquay before the rally to link up with the No Brexit Betrayal Bus and the main speakers Jacob Rees-Mogg, Wetherspoons Tim Martin and Nigel Farage who were to go aboard for a tour and seafood brunch.
This was to highlight to the assembled national media on how raw a deal Britain gets in the CFP. Especially in the South West where Britain only gets 10% of the cod, haddock and whiting quota. A fact later repeated by Mr Rees-Mogg on air.
Sadly, the gales which lashed the South West closed the harbour. Undeterred everyone retreated to the local Wetherspoons for a chat and pint.
Young Megavissey Skipper/Owner Bracken Pearce displayed courage and passion by standing up to speak in front of the 2000+ strong audience later that afternoon. Fishing raised great cheers of support each time it was mentioned by a speaker.
Aaron Brown of head of Fishing for Leave commented; “it took some guts to stand up and speak passionately in front of such an audience whilst sharing a platform with two of the biggest politicians in recent British history – well done Braken – good practice for next time!”
With two hours of discussion between FFL, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Nigel Farage and other prominent Brexiteers on the CFP and the threat of Chequers and the Transition, Scott Wharton of S&P Trawlers commented;
“Finally, we have some politicians who actually want to do something about the imbalance and unfairness of the quota system which is destroying all of our coastal communities”
“Who want to leave the CFP once and for all and then try to regenerate our great industry for all fishermen not only big companies”.
